Re: Open Thread

You can SMELL old Manhattan in that picture, you know, that odd stale pretzel/hero/sausage smell that is like nowhere else. Even that is fading!

Welcome mega-block.

I'll bet the boys in the 5th floor reading room of the Athenaeum loved the glow from that Chevy sign: https://www.flickr.com/photos/boston...n/photostream/

Re: Open Thread

Random question.

I seem to remember hearing about a plot of land out in western Mass (I forget how far west) that was bequeathed to the city of Boston by some old rich person, so now the city is responsible for some random patch of land outside the city. I think the city wanted to sell it or give it to the state, but the will disallowed it?

My google skills are failing me, so I can't find anything about it online. Does anyone knows what i'm talking about or did I dream the whole thing?

I think it's in Burlington MA. and located on the eastern border of the city. East of 128 and south of route 3. Maybe Mary Cummings Park or Wispering Hills Park.

Mary Cummings Park. Which for any aviation nerd (me), has a cool RC aircraft field that's worth checking out.

Re: Open Thread

On the plus side, its hard to see someone coming up with "gourmet" German cuisine. (What even could that be? Free range hasenpfeffer? The sauerkraut boiled in spa water? Gluten free gluten?)

On the down side, some "genius" chef might paint the interior all white and serve seaweed bars and steak frites.

I'm assuming that the purchase price is the name, good will, fixtures and whatever is left on the lease. It would be interesting to know if the last time the sale included both the business AND the building. I smell asset peeling, which might be fatal.

The weird thing about Jacob Wirth is that the German part of the menu is very small and not very good. If someone turned this into an ACTUAL German restaurant, serving more than the stereotypical knockwurst and jaeger schnitzel, I think it would be much more popular.

The space is beautiful as-is. Maybe a light freshening up is in order, but I would hate to see a major change.

Fair points. The Student Prince/Fort in Springfield does a much better job.

Make it a hybrid of hooters and John Harvard's Brewpub, but with drindls.

All the profit is in the beer - find a way to whitelabel a passable lager and you've got a license to print money.

Not even kidding - this concept would absolutely kill. Franchise that and thank me later.

Re: Open Thread

^ That's fucking incredible. Not only is the racing great and the engine notes are all intoxicating, but that 70mm footage leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. Thanks for that.

You're welcome KZ! A good baseline for showing how Monaco has been wrecked by grubby design since then. (Villefranche sur Mer is nicer and affordable.)
