Absolutely agreed on the counterpoint. It's actually better to just have the railing on the face of the facade without the pointless 1 ft or so of "balcony" space. It can turn an entire room into an outdoor living space.

But if you open the doors wide, the narrow balcony acts as a rail for the rest of the room, creating a great big balcony, if you will.
I would say it turns the room in to a porch, rather than a balcony, but this is precisely the reason that I like them. Much like oversized windows for street level restaurants and bars, it brings an airy, spacious feel to a room even though it is actually inside.

There's an entertaining piece in the Globe about the Viridian and its views of Fenway Park. The roofdeck has a view of the outfield, bleachers, and Green Monster. Some apartments get random "peek-a-boo views between the grandstand and upper decks" and can see chunks of the infield and dugouts. From one currently vacant apartment you can see home plate and the batters boxes from bed. A photo gallery is here.

The article also claims that the building is 65% rented. Not bad at all considering that it only opened up in May.
