How is it possible that freeing up traffic in the city can possibly heighten traffic further out, unless more people are commuting now. The commute from Marblehead, through Lynn and Revere has gotten no worse.

The real headline should have been, "Big Dig Accomplishes Goal: More Idiots Than Ever Driving to and from Suburbs During Rush Hour."

Well if you read the article you will see that this is the case.

People assume there will be less traffic, so they decide to drive, and more people end up driving-causing more traffic?

Welcome to Jevon's Paradox. There is another term for this but it escapes me at the moment.
BTW: Jevon's paradox is also the reason hybrid & electric cars aren't the solution to our energy crisis. |

Makes a lot of sense, but doesn't explain why electric cars are not the option...I don't mean to derail this too far, but if electric cars plugged in at home, and the electricity at home came from a renewable resource, then consumption wouldn't matter, only that demand would stay stable as efficiency and consumption would rise at similar rates.

True, but it assumes a rather robust supply of renewable resources, which we are far, far short of as of today.

We've got sunlight for a good billion years or so to come. We've got oceans, and wind, and the core of our planet. And then there's always cold fusion.

And the first person to figure out how to cheaply harness and store those things will be a very, very rich person. But as I said, we are far, far from that point.

Thats why even LAs 12 lane highways are always clogged, and 128 will be using the breakdown lane for driving maybe a year after the new lane is completed. Unfortunately, our governments have it wrong. They increase supply of roads to fix congestion, but only increase demand. And then they turn to mass transit and lower supply because of cost, thus lowering demand. |
