I have no idea why they made the building look like that, but I'm not so sure it's the "copyright" issue. Think about what that shot would look like if you didn't have the two "sides". It wouldn't look like a building - it would look like a stick. They needed to make it obvious that it was a real building, so they had to show depth.

IMHO.
