Beton (I'll assume you'll be the expert in this case) -
Is there a difference between this "Googie architecture" and mid-century modern? Or is the former just a subset of the latter? |

When buildings of this kind have been torn down in Los Angeles, it has resulted in public protest and dismay. People miss the Ships Restaurant in LA's Westwood Village, for instance.

^^To be fair that really is LA's signature style.
It would be similar to tearing down Federalist buildings in Boston. |

Exactly. The LA folks consider this to be needless destruction of their own local heritage. I can't speculate on whether it's at all important to Seattle, though.
If the building has been extensively altered, it would not seem to me to qualify as historical. (Hmm, echoes of the Arlington Building debate here in Boston.) Last edited by Ron Newman; 03-21-2008 at 12:31 PM. |

The pix of Ships that Ron linked to seem to strongly resemble the design favored by Denny's for many of their restaurants. I'll look into it and see if they share a common origin. Fans of this brand of Modernism will enjoy this slide-show of Lautner's Wolfe House, in the hills above Sunset. |
