Good! I hope the city takes on more responsibility ion leading the way to cleaning up the environment. If you ask me, this is more important than building skyscrapers.

Great idea. I hope many cities will follow suit. (i.e. LA)

There is a program in place in LA ... although I haven't seen any trees being planted.
http://www.milliontreesla.org/mtabout.htm I guess the iconic king palm is off the list (drought resistant but no shade, non-native). Anything to help the air here and make walking a nicer option (where it is even an option). |

Hopefully many of the newly planted trees will be American Elms. Once the most common tree in New England, they were wiped out in the 70s due to Dutch Elm disease. There are now Dutch Elm resistant varieties that can be planted. The American Elm is what makes Harvard Yard and Commonwealth Ave so great with their lofty canopy.

^ Interesting diagram of tree coverage by neighborhood.
What is the definition of "percentage of tree coverage", and how is it determined? |

Owning a home means investing in your community, by taking care of your property, knowing your neighbors, and caring for your block...These are the things that lead to tree-planting and similar community-building activities...I'm sure this can happen in public housing, or in neighborhoods where the majority of residents are not home-owners, but it's not the ideal situation for would-be arborists... |

I read somewhere that over it's lifetime, a tree gets rid of 2 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
200,000 tons out of the atmosphere. An average American creates 15,000 lbs of carbon dioxide in a year. A ton is equal to 2,000 lbs. From an environmental point of view, this program would be like removing 26,666 people from Boston for a year. Not bad at all. |

haha ya, when the ice caps melt though, their won't be a Boston, it'll be underwater  !
Shit! Don't worry, if these trees go up though, I will be much happier...the city will be even more beautiful. |
