Favorite Skyscraper and why

I'm not sure the answer to either part of this question, but I'm interested to hear from others: What is your favorite skyscraper, and why?

I think either 111 Huntington or Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte, NC.

Tough question. I've always loved the City Bank-Farmers Trust Building (20 Exchange Place) in Lower Manhattan. It's Deco, with Gothic gravitas.

Any chance we could divide this into eras? There should be seats at the table for both Cass Gilbert and Paul Rudolph.

Totally agree. Now that it's apartments my dream is to live in there (I've seen a few, it's siiiiiiiiiick).

I should also note that the American Commerce Center in Philly, and Shanghai Financial Center are pretty neat buildings. Too bad Transnational Place never made it in Boston.

It's cliche for a reason.

I can't pick just one.

I think if I had to, I'd pick the Chrysler Building in New York. As others have said, it's cliche, and the easy choice; but there's a reason for it. Absolutely gorgeous.

I'd also give a nod to the Woolworth Building in New York as well. It's over 100 years old and still a striking figure on the Manhattan skyline.

Finally, I can't not mention the striking and aptly named Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh. One of my favorite Gothic Revival buildings.

I really wish you'd teach a course (or even hold a single lecture) on this era of arch. You have such a vast knowledge of both the built and unbuilt environment that I perpetually find fascinating. I've learned more from your posts on here than I have in 4 semesters of arch history.

Re: Favorite Skyscraper and why

Thanks data...I have exactly zero credentials that would allow me to do so. I withered away a lot of my teenage years in the periodicals section of the BPL, reading old issues of Architectural Forum. This was in the 80s, when the concepts, methodologies, and values of Organic Architecture were very counter culture. It just made more sense to me than Postmodernism.

This forum is a classroom. I'm not the smartest kid in it. Sometimes I raise my hand, sometimes I throw spitballs.

I've grown weary with sports-talk. Listened to the album-version on the way to work...

Wish I made it to this show...
