Re: Archboston revamp

There is a Facebook group tangentially associated with this site. I'm not sure who set it up, but for some reason I am (along with a few others) an admin. People should join there, we will get you approved quickly.

Re: Archboston revamp

Briv,

You've done a lot for the forum. But life gets busy, and thats ok. You've been an absentee landlord for a few years now, and that's not ok. I get that you don't want to give up control over something you helped create, but the current status quo isn't working.

Most of us don't give a damn about forum software. We just want proper governance. Someone to approve new users and ban the trolls. And someone who knows what is going on and can communicate when the site goes down.

That's not a lot to ask. That's the bare minimum needed to run a forum.

Tbh, creating a forum isn't difficult if you know some basic coding or know someone who does. My brother has created and managed several forums and he and I talked about creating an alt for ArchBoston earlier this year but seeing how I am no where near as dedicated as some other members of aB, I felt that it is better that someone who is created it.

So dont kid yourself. There are billions of large forums. aB isn't some unique or special forum.

Bye bye.

The problem you have is BRIV might be an absentee landlord but nobody is leaving the site that he created. It's like having a Southie Brownstone in the 80's. The site is priceless, I come on just to look at the pictures on each of the projects. There is a group of 20 of you that are not very friendly or want to control free speech. Good get lost there is about 1800 users that hardly post because of the overall attacks by your group.

Go start your own website instead of swindling somebody's creation.
"Then say we just want governance to approve new users and ban the trolls. " But give us control of something we did not create.

At least offer to buy the website. That's called capitalism.

Maybe Magicman can pull the rabbit out of the hat to offer something lucrative to get these hacks off the site.

Yeah you can fuck off MagicMan. I came on board when Archboston was founded and we never had issues until people like Rifleman and MagicMan joined. You're the problem. Don't pretend you know the history of this forum.

Re: Archboston revamp

But you know what, you do bring up a good point about people not leaving this forum despite its shortcoming. That's why I'm going to proposed that when we are ready to migrate, the mods should permanently lock every single thread on this forum.

Re: Archboston revamp

Let me throw on a couple of ideas out there.

How about an old school AOL live message chat room on the site. That won't save to the threads. It might focus on real accurate material and substance towards the threads and the rest of the hyper-bowl crap towards the online board that will just disappear at the end of the conversations.

I hope someone has a list of everyone who volunteered their time and skill set to make a new site, before briv deleted everything.

I am ever more unsettled about this. There was a “technical aspects“ thread that had absolutely no melodrama or negative commentary at all, and yet that is also deleted.

Re: Archboston revamp

Well, it's been an interesting few days...

I just poured a glass of Old Monk Rum and reread this thread for about the fifth time today. Here are a few thoughts that resonate with me:

To clarify, there isn't some secret cabal looking to supplant briv. Indeed, I think all of us want to collaborate with briv, statler, any anyone else who has the time in service of the broad dialog on Architecture, Urbanism, Historic Preservation, Real Estate, and Public Policy. As I said in an earlier (now vaporized) post, I'm on the side of the community we've created here.

When I've brought up the possible need for governance, duty cycles for mods and admins, and a (loosely defined) code of conduct, this isn't meant to be a criticism of the way archBoston has operated for the past fifteen (!) years, but instead, a response to the changing conditions and prevailing attitudes and behaviors on the internet -- when the rains come, pull the tarp on the field, drive more carefully, head indoors.

And to repeat myself, I don't seek a role as a mod or admin. If there's an inclusive poll and posters select me, I'll do my best to be evenhanded in whatever role I'm assigned.

So that's all I've got. Briv, if you wanna rap about any of this, please be in touch as you have been in the past. I'd like to help. Peace.

Re: Archboston revamp

If Briv and Statler stay as active admins, I don't really want to move to a different site. This site is great, though it needs improvement and better new account management.

The group asking Briv to hand over the reigns is only trying to help. We both have the same goal, the continued success of this site.

Re: Archboston revamp

I, too, would be perfectly happy remaining here as long as some of the admin issues are straightened out (new user registration being the largest one). I'm hesitant to give up so much of the archives and userbase that moving to a new site would lose us.

Re: Archboston revamp

I do not post much, mostly due to the responses I see which are pretty harsh towards each other a lot of the time, but I am on the site 5-10 times a day. As long as I can get my fix of project pic updates daily (thank you Beeline and DZH22), I am happy.
I would hate to lose the nearly 15 years of project threads, posts and pics however. If there is a new site, it would be great to carry them over.

What makes you say that about harsh responses? If you actually took the time to read the comments of some of these angry bloggers your only dumbing yourself down and completely wasting your time on this planet. Just keep that in mind.

Why dont you read some of your old Rifleman posts to see how aggressive you are?

Kettle meet pot.

You even created a thread asking if you should be banned XD. Who even does that?

Re: Archboston revamp

Why haven’t we taken out the trash yet? Anyway I would support a move to SSC at this point, this unmoderated mess is a sad sight to see and it doesn’t seem like any substantive progress has been made since the beginning of the discussion months ago. When briv came back, we should have continued the plan to migrate to another site regardless of his return, and hopefully with much lower tolerance of trolls or alt-right hate.

Calling people "bloggers" was pretty much the last nail in the coffin needed to convince me.

Barbaric, I think you were one of the folks who talked extensively about being able to help with new forum technical issues. Is that right? Who were the other users who did the same? I forget the handles of the others.

Re: Archboston revamp

Yes, I have a ton of free time at work and would love to help with the forum software and theming, either technically or financially. However, no progress has been made so I’m starting to care less and less. We should have made a clean break but some people like stagnation I guess
