Re: Encore Boston Harbor Casino | Everett

Not sure if I would have noticed this if the sun wasn't hitting it in just the right way where Encore was lit up behind the other buildings (from Fenway, 12/3/18):

The facade lights were tested last night. It was gorgeous. I saw it for myself on Rt 16 around 11PM.

The base looks like it was flown in from the Bahamas. Will we be getting palm trees?

yea, noticed it too, wonder if it's on a dimmer switch to dial down the glare. (I might be missing the point)

You are, but you knew that.
By Vegas standards, this thing is super subdued. By Boston standards it's garish.
Personally. The tower lighting is about as classy and somewhat understated as could be hoped for.

I mean the podium is still cheesecake factory cheese, but the tower is quite nice, and better by night.

Encore indeed! Bravo.

I think it is, actually. I can see the name clearly from my apartment, and it was definitely brighter earlier in the evening. I think they turn it down as people (at Assembly?) need to sleep.

The core of downtown Boston sheds more light within than the Encore could ever do. People sleep in buildings there. Love this place. It's going to be VERY popular. A lot more than the city thinks. No need to go to Mohegan Sun, which has NOTHING around it. Watch the immediate area land prices skyrocket. After it and Hub on Causeway open (Live Nation building HUGE club there), Boston now in top 5 entertainment cities in nation, even worthy of awards shows. (L.A., NYC, Vegas, Miami, Boston)

If the prices in Everett go up, it will be because of the bus lane on Broadway and the redesign of Sullivan Square, not the casino.

I think the only award show we'll be having is the Hasty Pudding.

Prices in the immediate area went up as soon as the license was awarded and had already gone up just with the speculation... Also Wynn was buying up most of the area across the street. A bit late to the game for real estate speculation... it happened.

I don't take the Sullivan Sq. redesign as much of a game changer. There isn't enough that's going to be significantly different.

You all may scoff, but personally, I'm looking forward to the Oscars being hosted at the Hynes.

Re: Encore Boston Harbor Casino | Everett

Boston's national and international profile and media portrayal already far outstrips its actual size -- both geographic and population-wise (even if you define "Metro Boston" as being quite larger than Boston proper).

While I don't see this city hosting any major awards in the near future (or, really, ever), that's only one metric for "visibility" or prominence and, IMHO, not a terribly important one.

In terms of "perception," this tiny city -- the 21st largest in the country, 566th in the world -- is probably the fourth most significant in the U.S. (behind NYC, LA, Chicago, and -- just barely -- S.F.) and I do think additions like this Encore project add to that.

Nah, on an international scale, people think of THE MOTHER FUCKING CAPITOL, Miami, Orlando, and Vegas well before they think of Boston, and they certainly think of SF first.

And Miami only has 463,347 residents.

I think a couple hundred high paying jobs and an actual food/drink scene in Sullivan connected by a fully functional bus to Everett should put some upward pressure on rents and home prices there. At least I think those 6-figure jobs will have a bigger impact on the market than the tipped/wage-earning dealers and cocktail servers from the casino. I certainly don't think casino patrons relocating to be nearer the casino are going to have any effect.

Just BTW, salaries for dealers at the Everett casino will start at $60k plus benefits. That's not bad at all for a job that has basic requirements of 18+ and a 8th grade level of math competency.
