Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Must be planning to test them on track 61. I wonder if that means the express track isn't sufficient capacity for the cars that are beginning to ship.

Maybe its just to test Track 61 and ensure its ready for the Red Line cars when they start rolling out?

The main testing they'd need to do on it is clearance testing, and existing fleet is what they'd use for that. I'm guessing this is signal compatibility test. Red and Orange have identical ATO so quick verification test for Red would be in order before the same signal units go into the Red pilots.

I've seen them relatively regularly on the third track at Sullivan. There's a video somewhere in this thread I think of the train stopping at DTX and even opening the doors (on the wrong side) with announcements.

Is the Wellington yard expansion done?

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Just saw an MBTA official on Twitter say they are just using them for training over at track 61. It looks from the picture he posted to be the unumbered pilot cars delivered from China in 2017 which are never going into revenue service anyway (or at least not until rebuilt to production specs according to NEtransit)

Will every one of the new rail cars be tested before going into service on the lines? In a few months, we will start seeing new Red Line cars arrive.

Yes. Overall duration of testing will decrease as change orders from the pilot cars get processed on the production cars, but each car in the entire order has a mandatory "burn-in" hours/mileage target it has to contractually meet before it's allowed to be accepted into revenue service.

According to the T, to train more operators. (Assume running them on the yard lead or track 61)

Maybe the Wellington repair shop is becoming a bit overcrowded. With the new Orange cars. None of them have entered revenue service yet. Two to one, they're probably frigging delayed again for a 3rd time!!

and probably can start training Red operators using the Orange equipment (I'm assuming the controls are identical and the whole operator's cab is different only in its width and windows)

It certainly would get them a real type-rating on the Orange equipment, and a head start in getting comfortable with the Red.

Semi OT here: how do MBTA shift bids work? Can operators move from line to line and do they need a type rating on each vehicle (and will the Red/Orange have a common rating, kinda like Boeing 757/767 and 777/787 ?)

Probably goes according to the amount of seniority that the employees have. More pay also.

When I worked at United Airlines, everything went according to class or company seniority. If class was tied, then it went to company seniority.

I feel like I totally missed the conversation about this. What is this track?

Temporary Red Line test track on Track 61 to the Cypher St. grade crossing, with the thingy in the pic being a two-car/one-bay inspection shed on a turnout. Two new Orange cars have been brought to RL Cabot Yard to begin testing on it.

After the final car deliveries are complete they're going to disconnect the track from Red, remove the third rail and utility pipes along the ROW, re-grind the rails from rapid transit to RR profile, re-connect the Cypher St. crossing, and reinstate it as an FRA RR since it still has active CSX freight rights. Only now--for the sake of all Track 61 transit foamers--it'll have brand-spanking new track and railbed to work with over half its length. I presume the shed can serve some commuter rail purpose.

Just to play devil's advocate... they couldn't have used any other track?

Which one? Testing needs to happen during revenue service hours, the and existing yards aren't even big enough for the stationary new cars
