Addition. The Orange Line needs the capacity at rush hour.

Glad to see they redesigned the god awful LCD UI during the delay. (Photo from Twitter)

I believe that is the ultimate answer but not the short term one. Once all new cars are on site (in the expanded yard) the represent a capacity expansion.

But initially (which was the question ans was answered upthread) it'd make sense to retire the least reliable current trains first--the ones that too often represent negative capacity (when they break down).

In the short term, the effective capacity gets expanded by swapping worst-for-newest, even though nominal capacity won't grow.

They're still in testing with extra techs riding aboard, and need to pass certain warranty milestones in service before "accepted" really becomes legally accepted. So no operable 01200's are going to get yanked for a few months.

What you will see is a decreasing rush in the shop to do repairs, and a sooner policy that units which crap out go straight to the dead line instead of being maintained at day-to-day repair status.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Just rode 01403 from Back Bay to Mass Ave. Beyond immediately calling the Mass Ave station at back bay and then having to cycle thru all the stops, it was a smooth ride. Lots of people set up with cameras grabbing pics and taping the first run. The new LCDs with bus connections are nkce, but I can't believe we're still slapping stickers with the line's stops over the doors.

Riding eternal, shiny and chrome:

Caught the first run at State St. Rode it to downtown crossing.
Smelled exactly like a new car.

Everyone was sporting a big goofy smile.

Eventually, the old ones will be replaced as more new trains are added into service.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

I think that I might've asked this before, but I don't remember what the answer was. What will they do with the old rail cars as they come out of service for good?

Will they be scrapped for parts & then be dumped somewhere, such as in the deepest part of the Atlantic & made into a home for the marine life? New York City does that with their old ones.

Aluminum frames disintegrate too fast in saltwater to be used with any effectiveness for reef-building, though the stainless steel Red 01800's would be perfect for that purpose. The old cars will get scrapped with most of the metal sent out by the scrappers for recycling. There won't be anything left of them by the time the metal is parted out because they'll be crushed into a million pieces.

The Blue 0600's, due to lack of space at Orient Heights, were trucked out to the Pan Am freight yard in Billerica and scrapped there. Too early to tell for Orange because a scrap contract probably won't go out to bid until year's end with next Spring/Summer being the first dispersals. Wellinton does have a long service track stretching from the Route 16 overpass to Medford Jct. above the tunnel roof, connected to the Medford Branch as Orange's access to the outside RR network. They may use that as the dead line for decomissioned trains because it doesn't interfere with the test trackage for new cars. They can just keep shoving dead sets back there as far as the eye can see from a passing train...then pull them back forward when it's time to load on a flatbed for the scrappers.

CVB reports the trainset only did 3 round trips and was then pulled form service so the data can be analyzed. No word on when it will re-enter service.

According to the Globe, that just referred to taking it out of service for the evening rush. It will be back out there today midday.

Yes, but the T's tweet indicated it will only be running mid-day/not in full service for the foreseeable future. That is unacceptable after being billed as and marketed to the press as being ready to go. This isn't like the Type 9s where they were mere supplements. These are the actual replacements for the fleet and they need to start replacing the worst-performing cars immediately.

I don't think it's unacceptable. A slow uptake is very normal with new fleet - it would have been this way whether it happened in November or it happened now. They could have quietly entered it into service yesterday and waited until the first rush hour service to hold the press conference, but the people were restless and the MBTA wanted good PR, which they got.
