Indianapolis, a Bike Haven City

Indianapolis is probably best-known for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race,





but, should also be recognized for its ambitious downtown Cultural Trail.

A beautiful bike and pedestrian trail with an eight mile length, I don’t think that this trail takes a back seat to any city. Visit Indy - $2 million dollars in public art, 5 acres of plants and trees, transforming the landscape, impacting the environment, bioswales, natural storm water management, promoting fitness, connecting people and places, the Journey is the Destination.

With a lead gift of $15 million dollars from Eugene and Marilyn Glick, ground-breaking began in 2007 and the trail was completed in 2013.

In February, 2008, the organization, Projects for Public Spaces, published the article, BOLD MOVES AND BRAVE ACTIONS, and stated, ”Indianapolis, Indiana, is taking what may be the boldest step of any American city towards supporting bicyclists and pedestrians”. After looking at before-and-after pictures, one can reach the conclusion that this trail was a game-changing project for Indianapolis.

Study: Property values along Cultural Trail up $1B

“Property values have increased by $1 billion, businesses report more customers and higher sales, and residents feel safer Downtown since construction of the 8-mile Cultural Trail, according to a survey conducted by Indiana University Public Policy Institute.”

“Twenty-six percent of businesses said they now open on weekends, and 23 percent said they close later.”

“You can look around today, especially on Virginia Avenue, and see how the Cultural Trail already has changed our city,” Mayor Greg Ballard said in a prepared statement. “The impact is significant, and it will continue to grow in the years ahead.”

“The $63 million Cultural Trail was created through a public-private partnership between the city of Indianapolis and Central Indiana Community Foundation, which raised $27.5 million in private support. An additional $35.5 million came from federal transportation grants.”

Cultural Trail becomes unique drawing card for conventions and trade shows

“Indianapolis’ Cultural Trail has been called “a linear welcome mat,” “a directional sign” and “a marketer’s dream.”

“Of the $63 million total, $6 million was set aside in an endowment, which pays out 5 percent—or $300,000—annually for maintenance and improvements.”

“In 2014, the Indiana University Public Policy Institute placed counters on the Cultural Trail that estimated 1 million people used it that year.”

““We see people on the trail at all hours,” said Visit Indy Vice President Chris Gahl. “At 9 or 10 o’clock on a warm night, the trail can be pretty crowded.”

“About 4,500 volunteers also signed up to help maintain the trail.”

“There are already more than 20 cities that want to copy it.”

“Then the New York Times weighed in with two articles. One came in an early 2014 travel section that touted Indianapolis as one of 52 must-see destinations around the world. The reason, the Times raved, was the Cultural Trail.”
“You can’t buy publicity like that,” “... we realized what the Cultural Trail would mean from the standpoint of attracting visitors. But The New York Times article blew the lid off of that.”

“But there’s an important distinction between Indianapolis’ Cultural Trail and those urban trails (High Line in New York, the BeltLine in Atlanta, and the 606 in Chicago).” “We built this trail where people wanted to go, not just where there was a rail corridor or other available land,”

Circle Centre Mall is an attractive, solid-looking mall, I liked the food court setting.

Memorial for the World War II heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis, accessible via a ramp off the Trail.







Movie clip of actor Robert Shaw’s monologue describing the USS Indianapolis sinking from the blockbuster 1975 movie, “Jaws”. Some people think that it is the best scene in the movie.




The date mentioned of the ship sinking is one day off and the number of men onboard is 1196 according to the memorial, not 1100 as spoken in the movie. The tour guide for the Indianapolis Speedway tour said that 17 survivors were alive (July 27, 2018). They have a yearly reunion at the Memorial Day race.

The Cultural Trail connects with the southern terminus of the 23 mile Monon Trail, a trail included in the Rails to Trails Conservancy’s ‘Top 100 US Trails’.

Thanks for putting together such a great post. A lot of great moments on that cultural trail - though I have to say many seem more 'contrived'/'interventionist' than authentically urban, just judging from the pictures.

The advantage that the flyover and sun belt states have over boston is that the streets are much wider to begin with, so building bike lanes is easy.

Well seems they're making a real effort but...the streets are so empty. Where is everyone?
Nice canal but there wasn't a single coffeeshop, bar or restaurant along it. Overall the street level experience doesn't seem to offer much.

Your pictures make the city appear a lot more interesting than it seemed when I was there in 2010. I'd say it's probably 50% that I barely got a chance to see the city, and 50% the way you frame your shots. Regardless, thanks for the tour!

You’re right, pedestrian and vehicular traffic is light compared to what you see in Boston, on the other hand, it was a breeze driving around town and bicycling the Trail while not feeling deserted at the same time. Several of the first trail pictures were taken between seven and eight-thirty in the morning before there were any leisure or commuter riders. As the day progressed, I saw more people on the Trail. The strange thing was that the mall garage had many more parking slots available during Friday midday but was filled to near capacity Friday evening and Saturday daytime. Indianapolis is not a first-tier city like Boston.

The Canal Walk is devoid of retail and restaurants and the consensus is that the canal has not lived up to its potential. Now, there are few parcels for development remaining to change the situation. On the other hand, it’s free wheeling up and down the canal and there is no litter and it is still an attractive amenity. How many cities can boast of a beautiful canal?

On the whole, I enjoyed the Cultural Trail because of its spacious width, the charm of its art pieces, the charm of the Mass Ave neighborhood and the Fountain Square neighborhood, the restaurants downtown on Washington Street, the absence of grime, derelict buildings and litter, the separation from traffic, the attractive signage and the attractive paver surface instead of asphalt or concrete. I wished that I had more time to bicycle at night, something I’ve never done before. The entire trail has light posts. It was an enjoyable and pleasant experience. Congrats to Indy for the vision.

i'm spending summer in one of America's great Bike trail mecca's Park City, UT.

We have all kinds of amateur, pro and Olympic athletes training here.

i honestly had no idea bikes had grown to become so popular in the mountains.

Biking is such a great way to enjoy and explore the planet and to keep in shape.

Appreciate the comment, Justin. It takes several hours putting together a one hundred plus photo thread; uploading photos to Flickr is the tedious, time-consuming part.

I have an idea for one more photo thread, if the pictures meet my satisfaction, I’ll post the photo thread. That’ll probably be the end of the road for me for posting photo threads unless I experience a special place and think that it will get enough attention from forum members.

Ed, thanks for this post. I really love when someone on here occasionally does a really great photo-documentation of a city that's not well known.

I haven't experienced it in person, but I actually don't mind that the canal walk there isn't lined with coffee shops - sometimes, it's nice to just let a monumental project speak for itself. I love cozy streets and close neighborhoods, but nothing beats biking along a wide, uncongested corridor with lots of art and sculpture.

HenryAlan, FK4, my threads don’t get nearly the number of clicks that other threads get so I really appreciate your comments.

FK4, if you ever bike the Historic Connect Boston bike trail, I’d be interested in your opinion on how you think it compares to the Cultural Trail, even though you know of the Cultural Trail only through pictures.
