Why do I think that F-Line is actually Ari Ofsevit?

If that were true, it might be time to set up the formal psychiatric intervention for arguing with myself. ;-)

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

I don't think Ari has nearly the depth of expertise F-Line has.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Does anyone know if the new trains on both the Red & Orange Lines will run any faster or at the same speed as the old trains - about 40mph?

That's dependent on the condition of the tracks. There are speed restrictions on a good portion of both lines to prevent derailment. It'll be years before any of those issues are taken care of.

They will have better acceleration/breaking, though, so at least they will have that going for them.

That isn't really new news - last update on that page was August 13th. Did see a picture lately, though, of full 6 car test trains on the express track which is cool:

Haven't seen that one before.

But I posted the other one to let everyone know that there haven't been any changes since the last time, & that things are still on track.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

- Delivery of Springfield-built cars to Boston will begin "just before Christmas".

- Springfield is/will be building for SEPTA and LA Metro in addition to the MBTA, with a MARTA contract potentially in the future.

- CRRC's contract with the T would call for MA to pay additional tariff costs. The facility is in Richard Neal's House district, and he's the incoming W&M Committee chair, so it's unlikely Congress will take action against CRRC for the next 2 years...

"Completing each car takes 23 working days."

Once that is completed, CRRC will ship the cars to the MBTA via truck. It's up to MBTA when those cars get put into service carrying passengers.
I assume that there is a lengthy test/break-in period after they get to Boston/before they go revenue?

Well, maybe not "lengthy" given the state of the old Orange Line fleet (mostly DOA). A buggy new car would perform better than the old cars.

But IIRC they do need complete train sets to deploy the new cars.

Why though.

You can buy a new car with 15 miles on the odometer.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Because when cars crash, it might make the 5 o'clock news.

When trains crash it's the lead story for a week.
