Some have speculated that the long-range plan is to break up Amazon into two or three even four companies. That Bezos expects that Trump will seek to break-up Amazon, quicker rather than later.

I think it is also a life safety matter. They appear to be building right out to the property line, and without this, the emergency egress would be a leap onto the railroad track.

DC would get management of the Cloud. NYC would be my bet for Amazon media (vice LAX) and business partnerships, plus oversight of European / African operations.

I think Boston will be a lead R&D center for future stuff: AI, machine learning, voice recognition, robotics, 'big data',...

50,000 employees with an average salary of $100,000 = a payroll of $5 billion.
