Re: North-South Rail Link

Alon Levy is not having it. https://pedestrianobservations.com/2018/06/20/massachusetts-sandbags-the-north-south-rail-link/

Re: North-South Rail Link

As far as I can tell the Boring Company is a used TBM that Musk picked up on Craigslist somewhere and a crew to run it. Unlike space transportation or electric cars, tunnel digging seems to be a...

Re: North-South Rail Link

Ah. For some reason I get those two confused. :-) Actually calls for two two-track tunnels with the tracks on two levels.

Re: North-South Rail Link

I read an article, probably by Ari Osfevit but I can't find it at the moment, advocating digging the NSRL with a large-diameter TBM, large enough for 2 levels of 4 tracks each and station platforms...

Re: North-South Rail Link

The report you linked to says nothing about the CA/T tunnel having been excavated and backfilled for the NSRL. It's also from 1997, which was early in the Big Dig construction process. Mind you, they...

Re: Commonwealth Avenue Improvement Project

Yes, in bike facility design there's a tension between making something you can go fast on and something that's slower but facilitates broader use. As an experienced urban cyclist who likes to ride...

Re: North-South Rail Link

I want a source for that. It makes no sense at all to dig further than you need to and fill it back up with dirt. They'd have to dig it out anyway to build the NSRL, so what good would it do?

And...

Re: North-South Rail Link

I don't think that's true: the slurry walls go down to bedrock, but I'd be surprised if they dug any deeper than they had to to build the road tunnel.

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

That map is ridiculously inaccurate (though it does make the point).

Re: TransitMatters Regional Rail Plan

You're still forgetting the space taken up by the motors, which aren't small. If you've ever looked at a powered truck without a railcar on it, there is no space left.

Re: North Washington St Bridge

Charlestown is accessible from basically 3 points: Sullivan Square, the Gilmore Bridge and the North Washington St Bridge. (Well, and the Rte 1/I/93 ramps.) I can easily see where shutting down one...

Re: TransitMatters Regional Rail Plan

Problem with putting the batteries in the trucks is that a battery pack that can power a commuter rail coach any reasonable distance is going to be kind of big, and powered trucks don't have a whole...

Re: TransitMatters Regional Rail Plan

The trucks on commuter rail coaches are not powered trucks, and adding motors to trucks that were not designed to be powered doesn't strike me as remotely low-effort. You'd be much better served to...

Re: Logan Airport Capital Projects

OK, this is a Crazy Transit Pitch if ever there was one, but: here is an ideal application for an urban gondola. Build it as a loop: instead of going out and back like nearly all such installations,...

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Concur. Porter already has a T station, and there's no way you're adding a Green Line station there without ridiculous expense: you have to either take a whole lot of commercial properties or tunnel...

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

And wow, the Walsh-Barletta-Granite proposal sure is ugly, all the stations look like prison camps. Glad that one lost.

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Elevators at nearly every station, the full Community Path, and a full flyover junction between the branches. Not bad. The Community Path still changes sides between Lowell and Central (or wherever...

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The winning Green Line Extension proposal from GLX Constructors is now up on the GLX website (https://www.mbta.com/projects/green-line-extension-glx). The two losing bid are too.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Train-surfing is a useful skill, though on a crowded train it can be tricky to get your feet planted far enough apart for stability.

Re: Green Line Reconfiguration

NSRL is going to be over toward Fort Point Channel, so it won't be affected by this.

Re: Summer St. Gondola

8 150# people weigh 1200 pounds, and the carriers don't weigh particularly more than that. On some mountain installations (more often chairlifts), they have to limit the number of people who can ride...
