Re: Amtrak / Regional Rail Discussion Thread

Eurostar uses customs preclearance (for the time being!). Very easy. There is only one intermediate station on each side of the border though, both modern and customs-sealed. And my trip skipped both...

Re: Amtrak / Regional Rail Discussion Thread

I don't remember any Boston/Montreal buses taking less than 8 hours anyway. 9 hours is already competitive then subtract the track improvements...

Re: Green Line Reconfiguration

BU East, BU Central and Blandford really should be cut down to no more than 2 stops. Possibly everything rearranged depending upon how development proceeds further west. Tough though since BU East...

Hah, yeah MBTA officials would have kittens if they visited Amsterdam.

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The new Parisian trams have plenty of at-grade crossings and high frequencies. While they're not "core" they're intended to be a major backbone transit network for outer Paris.

The DLR is...

Re: Biking in Boston

Just to be clear about this point, independently from the current context: no, that's not considered best practice. Not in any place that's serious about cycling, anyway.

Best practice is to...

Re: Biking in Boston

It's telling that the one person on a bike in the picture is on the sidewalk.

Nice number of crosswalks on the block -- I wonder if anyone is crazy enough to use them. No visibility with parked...

Re: Biking in Boston

Let's be fair -- this kind of bullshit occurs plenty in Western European countries too. Probably more so... the UK seems to suffer from a severe case of NIH syndrome when it comes to design.

Re: Allston-Brighton Developments

Still plans for 215 parking spaces, which makes me wonder where they're going to put such an enormous amount of parking. Can't be good.

Brown has a big parking lot facing Gardner Street where his...

Yeah, can't wait until the President Trump & PM Johnson press conferences... tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum.

Re: Open Thread

Except that they'll lose the voting rights they had. Just as well, I guess, if Nigel Farage was an MEP, must've been worthless.

Oh and Scotland and Northern Ireland will exit the UK. So it's more...

Re: Commonwealth Avenue Improvement Project

This project will not include a crosswalk at Naples Road. I hope it will not preclude it. However, the general thought is that the long-term solution there is going to be addressed as part of Comm...

Re: Biking in Boston

I didn't care much for the bus+bike lanes in Paris. Better than nothing, I suppose, but still pretty uncomfortable whenever a bus approached.

Re: Commonwealth Avenue Improvement Project

I believe that they are trying to coordinate the MBTA station rebuilds along with Phase 2A, as suggested.

The consolidation is definitely happening, it's linked to AAB-compliance, it's just a...

Re: Affordable housing along the pike

There's a few things going up in Allston/Brighton, despite the city's insanely difficult approach to permitting development.

For the rest, simply name the towns that border the Pike, and you will...

Re: Biking in Boston

A little surprised at the low numbers for the 1/CT1. Figured it would be over 2,000 people per peak period. Anyway, there might be more all-day ridership on such a route, and that's what boosts its...

Re: Traffic Disaster Looming in BOSTON

That's why I call New Hampshire the "Freeloader" state.

Freedom ain't free. Few people would be willing to pay the true cost of driving, it turns out, though. Especially once you factor in the...

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

Might be a blessing in disguise -- gives the FRA time to get its shit together so that non-insanely-heavy DMUs can be ordered (like those used here).

We also need some time to drag the operations...

Re: North-South Rail Link

My friend in Munich has told me that the transit authorities have been regretting the decision to only build 2 tracks for the S-bahn tunnel. Seems like S-bahnification of the MBTA commuter rail could...

Re: Biking in Boston

Removing the concrete island at Mountfort and Carlton is the long term solution... we pushed for it, but DOT has resisted. I hear that they might reconsider now with the delays... we'll see.

Re: Biking in Boston

That reminds me of a story here: a "Barclays branded" London bike share bike showed up one day at a corral. This would be uninteresting except for the fact that it's been 18 months since all...

Re: Closing Newbury Street to cars

Never understood why people would say that DTX is a 'failure'... I always see tons and tons of foot traffic there during the day and evening whenever I visit. It's the easiest place to reach by T in...
