Re: Fairmount Line Upgrade

The Central Mass. Railroad had pretty nice station buildings, and it got eliminated anyway. I'd say the correlation between amenities and ridership, beyond a certain baseline, is tenuous at best.

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Sales taxes are a terrible way to do this anyway, as they're about the most regressive form of taxation in existence. What we really need is to amend the state constitution to permit a graduated...

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Well, the original plan was for the extension to go to West Medford, but Medford hated that idea because they hate nice things. In fairness, the other problem was going to be crossing the river,...

Re: MBTA Bus & BRT

I'm going to push back on the elimination of the Clarendon Hill branch of the 90. My wife uses it to get to work, and next year my son may be using it to get to school.

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

Do the bridge clearances in the system permit running bilevel cars under catenary? Obviously the Providence Line is OK in this regard, but what about the others?

Re: Green Line Type 10 Procurement

Doesn't this lock them into CAF as the vendor for the Type 10s, though? I thought there was no standard for MU systems for light rail.

Re: Quabbin & MWRA Water & Sewer

I wonder if that's a problem for the three breweries in Cambridge as well. Though I imagine all breweries heavily filter their water, for consistency.

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

And don't get me started about Sullivan (which I commuted through for a few years); it absolutely boggles me the way it completely turns its back on the dense residential neighborhood right next to...

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

The article also says they're looking at a direct connection to the station from the west side. Sure wish that was there when I served on a jury at Middlesex Superior Court a couple months ago. The...

Re: MBTA Bus & BRT

IIRC it went up Ames, took a right on Broadway and looped around onto Main.

Re: North Station, Charles River Draw, & Tower A

$100 million is the design and construction cost. And relocating a major station more than a quarter mile further away from its transit links just to get out of rebuilding a bridge strikes me as......

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

That's the one that kind of threw me... like, how do you even route that? I've heard talk here about a westerly Blue Line extension under Storrow, but this is a new thing altogether.

At last Tuesday's meeting of the GLX Construction Working Group, the GLX team presented the current iteration of the design for the Community Path. The slides from the presentation are here...

Re: South Bank Bridge Project | West End

Not quite; they'd also have to build a bridge across the river. This is, I believe, planned for when they replace the railroad drawbridges.

Re: North-South Rail Link

Not really. Without the NSRL he'd still have to transfer between North and South Stations. With it he can change trains at South Station, which is much faster and easier.

Re: North-South Rail Link

As far as I can tell the Boring Company is a used TBM that Musk picked up on Craigslist somewhere and a crew to run it. Unlike space transportation or electric cars, tunnel digging seems to be a...

Re: North-South Rail Link

Ah. For some reason I get those two confused. :-) Actually calls for two two-track tunnels with the tracks on two levels.

Re: North-South Rail Link

I read an article, probably by Ari Osfevit but I can't find it at the moment, advocating digging the NSRL with a large-diameter TBM, large enough for 2 levels of 4 tracks each and station platforms...

Re: North-South Rail Link

The report you linked to says nothing about the CA/T tunnel having been excavated and backfilled for the NSRL. It's also from 1997, which was early in the Big Dig construction process. Mind you, they...

Re: Commonwealth Avenue Improvement Project

Yes, in bike facility design there's a tension between making something you can go fast on and something that's slower but facilitates broader use. As an experienced urban cyclist who likes to ride...

Re: North-South Rail Link

I want a source for that. It makes no sense at all to dig further than you need to and fill it back up with dirt. They'd have to dig it out anyway to build the NSRL, so what good would it do?

And...

Re: North-South Rail Link

I don't think that's true: the slurry walls go down to bedrock, but I'd be surprised if they dug any deeper than they had to to build the road tunnel.
