Re: South Station Tower | South Station | Downtown

God, what a sea of parking lots.

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Something similar: Back in the 1940's they thought about putting a depressed Central Artery down the middle of a drained Fort Point Channel.

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

I really like this. One question: does Boston harbor freeze enough in the winter to hamper ferries during that time?

Re: The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

That last photo with the O'Neill and the Longfellow Tower juxtaposed against the new Hub on Causeway really shows how the quality of architecture has come a long way since the 80's.

Re: Proposed But Never Built

If the aerial photo were at the same angle as the rendering, Arlington would be laid out the same in both. The rendering did minimize the presence of trees, which changes the look quite a bit. ...

Re: Boston & Cambridge - 1950's

The freight train you see is operating on the Union Freight Railroad, which connected the rail line behind North Station with the rail line at South Station, by way of Commercial Street and Atlantic...

Re: Proposed But Never Built

Looks like the highway rendering depicts Arlington accurately. Here is Alewife today:

Re: Proposed But Never Built

Here's a sweet one. The 1969 proposed Route 2 interchange at Alewife Brook Parkway. The view faces north. Route 2 to Lexington goes off to the left. The Red Line extension curves west towards...

Re: Fenway Theater | 12 Lansdowne St | Fenway

I think the development will be better than a parking lot. The rendering looks okay to me.

Re: Flickr Finds

I went through the photostream, and what I saw are many old buildings on land that would have been worth preserving, and others with at least the original facades worth saving as part of new...

Re: New us masterplanned city.

When LBJ was President, I remember a program that was floated by his administration to build completely new cities in the US. It obviously never happened, but I distinctly remember it being...

Re: The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

All in all I like it. It is somewhat messy and jumbled, but that fits the nightlife/sports/entertainment functions. It looks like fun, and that's an appropriate look in this context. The jumbled,...

Re: "The Plan" architectural magazine

It's chock full of very, sleek, modern architecture, some brutalism, some mid-century influence. Also a lot of great city planning articles. The graphics throughout are superb. It's based in...

"The Plan" architectural magazine

I'm sure most of you have seen this one, but The Plan magazine is something I just found at a bookstore, I had never heard of it, and I immediately was blown away by it. Their website is ...

Re: Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

The narrow crowded walkway on the Gilmore Bridge, and then the very long, wide railway corridor extending unbridged towards the horizon, screams out for a pedestrian bridge crossing a couple of...

Re: Rose Kennedy Greenway

Why not just eliminate the on/off ramps? Yeah, I know, it's anti-automobile, but, hell, the underground expressway and its connections with Sumner and Callahan tunnels would still be fully in...

Re: I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Why can'y they just go with this one, but instead of the paved path on land, make a much wider trail bridge a bit out on the river and parallel to SFR? It would be cheaper. I'm pretty sure, than an...

Re: General Infrastructure

That area is obviously loaded with very wealthy NIMBYs. No transportation infrastructure of any kind will be built in that area for the forseeable future.

Re: Rose Kennedy Greenway

I hate the balconies and glass patio doors/windows slapped on there. Just my personal taste, but it looks really sloppy, not integrated with the rest of the building.

Re: The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

The dark blue cladding on the tower, two photos above, coupled with its geometric offset every few floors, bothers me. In that photo it's dark blue, in the last photo it isn't, determined by the...
