Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Even if Porter takes much longer, a one-stop extension past Union Square to Dane or Park would make a lot of sense and be very cheap. The Fitchburg Line ROW is quad-track-width the whole way, and...

Re: TransitMatters Regional Rail Plan

Yes, based on a conversation I just had with Ari, that's exactly the idea. And honestly, I love it.

It avoids the massive swamp trestle that the Army Corps of Engineers used to rack up the cost...

Re: MBTA Bus & BRT

The 28X wasn't just killed by "idiot politicians". It was announced by the state at a press conference without even talking to local politicians or community groups. Very obviously just a grab for...

Re: Green Line Reconfiguration

BC + South Street + Chestnut Hill Ave (which would require new platforms) account for less than 2,000 daily riders - about 13% of B Branch ridership.

Re: Green Line Type 10 Procurement

These are plug doors (the same style as on the Boeing LRVs and San Francisco's Bredas, but an improved mechanical design) that slide rather than fold. They're safer on the extremely narrow platforms...

Re: Red Line Extension to Mattapan

Not to get off-topic, but those actually were never designed to be part of a future extension, and for good reason. There's nowhere useful to go from there - west and you're just duplicating the Red...

Re: Red Line Extension to Mattapan

That's not necessarily true:

The Haymarket North Extension was built with the third track and other preparations...

Re: Red Line Extension to Mattapan

As they often did, BERy planned for the possibility of that extension. The line goes onto a 3% grade west of Milton station, which was purposely built...

Re: Green Line Type 10 Procurement

Additionally, the Type 9s are (like the Type 8s) only partially low-floor. The T has committed to go 100% low-floor with all future light rail purchases.

Re: Fairmont Line Upgrade

Been a while since we had an update. Blue Hill Avenue station is well on its way - most of the platform is in place, as are the supports for the ramps.

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

A little bit of self-promotion: my masters thesis (https://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/111263) (done with the MIT Transit Lab under contract to the MBTA) included an analysis of Type 10 options and...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

We've had the ferry discussion so many times on here, and it always comes down to three basic problems: Most potential ferry docks are too long a walk from actual destinations...

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Here's a 2006 press release (https://www.mbta.com/news/1400) from when the policy was implemented. It does appear to be inbound only. I assume that is to allow ticket checks to take place on outbound...

Re: Seaport Transportation

With the Type 9s freed up by a Type 10 order? You could drop tracks, convert catenary to pantograph, install a maintenance facility, and buy a trailer to ship cars to Riverside when heavy work is...

Re: I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

And the facade crumbles. It was never an honest plan. It was always a Trojan horse to use transit dollars on a highway project.

Re: General Infrastructure

Running in reverse isn't a big issue. Amtrak's Keystone Service, Downeaster, and [New Haven-Springfield] Shuttle all run in reverse using cab cars or a second locomotive.

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

The combination of fixed schedule, ease of capture (once you're on a train or bus, it's very easy to keep you there), ubiquitous surveillance (both from cameras and fellow passengers), high potential...

Re: MBTA Bus & BRT

I moved to San Francisco a couple weeks ago and it's very interesting to compare their transit systems. Both have quite a bit they could learn from each other.

The Muni bus system is altogether...

Re: Red Line / Blue Line Connector

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

BU's official transportation plan claims that the BU Bus is for transit to the Med Campus only, and not intended for intra-bus trips. It also claims that the B Branch and 57 are under capacity at...

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

The 57 and the B Branch should serve different markets. Until not too long ago, the 57 ran semi-express (dropoff-only inbound, pickup-only outbound) east of Packards Corner, and the B Branch handled...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Extending the Orange (or Red) lines to eight cars isn't out of the realm of possibility, but it's unlikely to be necessary. The Orange Line can go as low as four-minute headways and the Red Line as...
