Re: Worst Proposed Development

I picked the Christian Science Center alterations. Not because it will necessary have a bad impact on as grand scale a scale as the other projects, but simply because the Christian Science Center is...

Re: Worst Empty Parcel

Agree.

But I voted for Hayward Place.

Re: Why New Development in Boston Sucks

Good point.

I would suggest that the primary impact of Boston's Byzantine rules of development are to dramatically delay and reduce the supply. Which in turn drives up prices.

I didn't mean to...

Re: Why New Development in Boston Sucks

The original article is a valid description of Boston development. But it fails on proving a cause and effect relationship.
But in fact, the most boring Boston architecture, the "brown box" high...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Well, both maps have more than a few common sense projects in common:

1. Connecting the Riverside Green Line with the Blue Line (although I would prefer via Huntington Ave).

2. Putting a subway...

Re: The recession is over, let's spend money! Boston Development 2010

But they pay well. :)

Although I did not realize that the Boston Marine Industrial Park was intended to house "back office" for financial firms. This really doesn't sound either industrial or...

Re: MBTA to serve T.F. Green next month

Given all the money that has been appropriated for rail projects during the last couple years (not to mention those dollars now given up by New Jersey and Wisconsin), if I were Rhode Island's...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Actually, that is very well thought out. Extend the Red Line up to Burlington Mall/Lahey Clinic and you've got a deal. :)

Re: Second airport, Dulles-style

Right.

And for that matter, DC has experienced a lot of growth in Roslyn and Crystal City, in large part due to their easy access to National (DC's equivalent to Logan). Of course, the presence...

Re: Second airport, Dulles-style

As someone who was around back then, I can say you are absolutely spot on !

We can argue how best to meet the transportation needs of the Boston area. This is at least a valid discussion. But...

Re: Government Center Renovation

The fundamental problem with the Boston subway is that it is not just old, but old in concept. And by that, I mean:

1) In Boston, subway covers less and commuter rail covers relatively more than...

Re: Amtrak's $117 Billion Plan For High Speed Travel

Right. Curves designed for cars at 65 or 75 mph are not adequate for HSR moving at 200+ mph.

And for that matter, the Connecticut Turnpike (I-95) is just about as curvy as the existing New Haven...

Re: Amtrak's $117 Billion Plan For High Speed Travel

You didn't read the original Amtrak proposal, did you ?

Try here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/38345039/A-Vision-for-High-Speed-Rail-in-the-Northeast-Corridor

There are five sets of alignments...

Re: Amtrak's $117 Billion Plan For High Speed Travel

Politically, the route should include both Hartford and Providence, and maybe Long Island.

Also, if we are talking about spending $100 billion or so, the North-South rail link should be thrown in...

Re: International Place Appreciation Thread

I've always liked the shape and massing of International Place, but still dislike the windows--especially the white framing.

Re: State Senate would create transportation superagency

Minneapolis has used a T symbol as long as I can recall--at least as far back as the 70s.

Re: High Speed Rail (Boston to... Texas?)

The map of High Speed rail routes is too political in my opinion (and by political, I refer to accepting political boundaries, not politics in the sense of Republican vs Democrat).

Case in point: ...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos

There goes the customer service.

So, why the cuts for BU West and East ? This can't be based on ridership.

Re: Best New Proposal Vote

I voted for the South Station tower merely because I want closure on what are three decade-old plans for the South Station transportation center.

In all other respects, Columbus Center adds the...

Re: Boston Skyline

From a purely skyline perspective (not taking into account street level suitability), Boston could use a couple more 800 or 900 foot buildings to add accent. But only a couple. Put in too many, and...

Re: Boston's Best Modern Urbanism

Christian Science Center
Rowe's Warf
Mandarin

While the Hancock is elegant, its impact is purely on the skyline.

Although I didn't vote for it, as an office building, 75 State isn't bad.

Re: 45 Province St

Well, along with 33 Arch Street, 1 Lincoln and 111 Huntington are really the only completed buildings of any height built since 2000.

The people who advocate trains DO ride trains.

Re: Filene's

There is something fundamentally screwy when a 50 to 100 year (or more) real estate design is determined by short term credit considerations or predicted one to two year market conditions.
