Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

None of those signals have absolute priority (again, are you just calling for a green extension/red shortening system? That already exists). The SL should have the same standards as a metro, since...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

The current setup both has operational signal priority and manages the current frequency without endless queuing. If we're keeping the SL at roughly current service, TSP is all that should be done....

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

AFAIK, the current D St light does have signal priority enabled, although not as aggressive as possible. However, in a future scenario with increased frequency, it becomes difficult to move enough...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Regarding MassDOT's plan to extend to Malden Center, I think it's a worse route than mine, so I wrote a blog post to explain why:...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

The best reason to do it is that all of the infra except 2nd st can be used for other routes- the Everett buses need a faster route to Sullivan, so use that to piggyback a cheap urban ring route that...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

This is the best route design that I could make, assuming no overpasses or expensive bridge work was allowed. Gets a functioning urban ring up for less than $30m.
Red = Dedicated Busway
Orange =...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

It's cheaper to build both now than try and build a second platform when the service gets extended. The initial extension was cheap and Everett desperately wants better transit- we may be posting...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Fantastic photos! Looks pretty much done, and the stations look like a model for the cost-effective but still useful new MBTA.

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Especially since the SLG is supposed to take lots of ridership off the 116/117, the T should at least explore running short turns in the Chelsea->Airport section with the displaced buses.

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

1: Connectivity to the seaport comes from transferring from the Blue Line to the SL3 service at Airport. Spending millions on a lower-capacty, slower extension along the Blue Line RoW does nothing to...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Anyway! The amazon bid proposes a second silver line extension from the haul road to Suffolk downs, which would degrade frequencies on this one and duplicate the blue line.

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Is this still scheduled to open April 2018? How is there possibly seven months of work left, even conceding that they need to finish Bellingham sq station

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

I'd be interested in a first ride or walk down the RoW! TransitMatters might want to take a video of the opening trip, like they've done with the Everett bus lane.

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Whoops, I meant the 112! The 111 will still be fastest to downtown- it really complements the SL, not directly competing. On the other hand, the 112 is basically a slow, terrible-frequency version of...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Of those 8.7k, roughly 3k are projected to come from the slow, mixed traffic 116 and 117 (and the 120, which loses a big chunk of its reason to exist)

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Still, an 8.7k net change in a town of 35k is a Cambridge Red Line sized flow- likely to be transformative to Chelsea and a massive boost to development/economic revival

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Great update as always. Fun fact: this service will be so useful that it's projected to have 8.7k riders per day, in a city of 35k. 23% of the population of Chelsea will use the service.

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

I agree, but only one suitable ROW was available, and the advantage of using it over a street running option comes in speed- buses, even with signal priority, will never clearly beat cars on time,...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

It would, but bus priority on rt.16 is currently unbuildable (it got shot down in the Everett transit plan for some reason). Plus, if you're building that, building the SLG busway out to Wellington...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

What he said. The solution to lack of opportunity leading to crime isn't "keep them away from jobs and opportunity", it's the direct opposite- provide cost effective transit to link potential workers...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

"Those transit riders are bringing drugs, bring crime. But some of them, I assume, are good people" <- This claim is dumb when it's Arlington resisting the Red Line, Boston resisting the Silver Line,...

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea

A two lane transit tunnel is worth looking at if the line ever gets converted to light rail, but the obvious (and much cheaper) solution is to negotiate with the coast guard to set a schedule for...
