Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

This is a tad distant from our usual fare here, but I’ve been pondering what Boston might look like if we managed to build the NSRL when it was originally first was proposed in 1910 - including...

Re: General Infrastructure

Anyone have any idea why Herald St, in particular, is so horribly congested every afternoon rush hour? The opposite direction streets, like Berkeley, are not nearly as bad in the morning.

Re: North-South Rail Link

We get it. Shall we talk about the actual rail project again?

Re: North-South Rail Link

Would anyone (f-line?) have any good sources on the early proposals for a north south rail link? I know that it was originally explored in the 1910s, but war amd economic problems derailed things (no...

Re: North-South Rail Link

If a business is running a deficit and lowers the price of their product, is that a kickback to the customers?

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

There are almost a hundred cars running during rush hour alone. Its going to take quite awhile to phase out all the old cars, even at several a month.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Pretty sure the suggestion was to use the parts for the remaining old trains still in service.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

In all fairness, ~$60k is still really optimistic for recent graduates. My wife does quite nicely in her job and has a valuable degree, and she made around $30k when she graduated (we’re in our early...

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

That math really doesn’t add up - 12k a month after taxes would imply 144k a year after taxes, rather than 125k before. If a household is earning 125k, then they’re taking home about 90k, or about...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

The inaccuracy is most obvious in the statement that, if the costs were passed onto only those that use the infrastructure, the infrastructure would not exist. This requires one to ignore the systems...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Beyond the inaccuracies in both the premise and the conclusion, you’re more focused on casting blame than finding a solution.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

There’s a very compelling argument there. But regardless of its strength, its several degrees away from the immediate issue.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

If we are framing a proposal of a new gas tax as a measure to fight congestion, then it absolutely is reasonable to object if you are not driving in the congested area. Either way ‘tough shit’ is not...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Elections, by nature, tend not to select for courage. Which is, generally, a good thing, whatever its downsides are.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Agreed. I think we’d have a much better time raising the gas tax than we did with the automatically adjusting gas tax (which I still oppose on philosophical grounds). Only problem is that we’d have...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

And we won’t have a carbon tax for the foreseeable future.

All I’m saying is that mass transit activists need to pitch inprovements as a way to help motorists, not as the end upside after we...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Suggestion: be more charitable to the majority that drive, and they might not be as antagonistic when in the ballot box and maybe we wouldn’t have such a hard time getting needed infrastructure...

Re: South Bay Center Expansion | Dorchester

I would be amazed if developing the parking lot into something denser is not on the table. Obviously, long-term, ts always an option. But this little corner is already pretty vibrant, so I can see...

Re: Comm Ave Bridge Replacement.

I don’t think I’m misusing the word ‘literally’ to say that literally every digital sign in Eastern MA along any road has had this alert for the past few weeks.
