Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Check out the FY20-24 Capital Investment Plan (CIP). The final Fiscal Management Control Board (FMCB) CIP vote is scheduled to happen today.

Any large project is first budgeted in the CIP.

Re: Logan Airport Capital Projects

I wonder if there's a good spot easily accessible to I-95 in Westwood, Norwood, Canton, Sharon, or Walpole.

Maybe at Route 128 Station or the University Station development. Maybe the Walople Mall...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Would upgrading the Grand Junction for this type of service be a MassDOT, MBTA, or Amtrak project?

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

The Reasonable Transit Page has been discussing the Downeaster in a NSRL world and/or extending Acela/Northeast Regional service to Woburn. I've crossed into "Crazy" territory, so I'm posting here.

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

Peak period trains are already noted on the schedule (https://cdn.mbta.com/sites/default/files/route_pdfs/2018-fall/2018-10-29-fitchburg.pdf). That would be a great starting point.

They are pretty...

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

Acela will be retired and replaced with Avelia by then. If many of the planned improvements take place, and we see a truly high speed corridor, it would make sense to remove stops and take advantage...

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

I think the truth is a mix of what you two are saying.

There are low-density stations that serve low-ridership and will never see huge ridership numbers regardless of frequency. Silver Hill comes...

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

Just an anecdote:

With Regional Rail frequencies, I'd be taking the Orange Line -> Regional Rail (to Auburndale) -> bike to destination, today.

The schedule is not aligned with my schedule,...

Re: Congestion toll in Boston?

Good idea.

The beauty of a congestion charge (which isn't the be-all-end-all policy by any means), is that it actually taxes and discourages something drivers also hate: traffic.

As purely a...

Re: Congestion toll in Boston?

A 10% additional income tax with no other changes in taxing or spending to offset the negative repercussions of that additional tax is ridiculous.

Claiming it would cause a non-MA city to become...

Re: Congestion toll in Boston?

The taxi drivers that bought medallions made a terrible business decision. I have sympathy for them, just like others who make terrible business decisions. But they do not deserve any subsidy. They...

Re: Congestion toll in Boston?

Here's a more reasonable proposal. It doesn't solve all of our problems, but would be a step in the right direction and have widespread support.

Currently, there is a per-ride tax on ride-share...

Re: I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

So, is widening the Grand Junction bridge to accommodate a multi-use trail not part of this project?

Re: Congestion toll in Boston?

Geometric inefficiency on an under-priced, un-managed, limited resource (space).

These things (as well as pricing) encourage people to use the limited space in a geometrically inefficient...

Re: Congestion toll in Boston?

Is there a mechanism in place for a county-specific (ie Suffolk County) gas tax? Or a municipality-specific (ie Somerville) gas tax?

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

I think mis-allocation of government spending (federal and otherwise), as well as inefficiencies and poor cost control are all problems and not mutually exclusive. And all of these issues affect the...

Absolutely!

But the claim was "Porter is the highest used of the non terminus commuter rail stops ... besides back bay" which was the case until a few years. Ruggles has surpassed Porter in CR...

By this metric, wouldn't surface routing along Marginal and Hudson be most desirable?
