Re: Amtrak / Intercity Rail Discussion Thread

Rail = yes, Trail = no.

Rail traffic can run "sealed" because there's no risk of trespassing beyond the fence from a moving (or stopped + supervised-evacuation) train. Trailgoers left to their own...

Re: Amtrak / Intercity Rail Discussion Thread

Reactivation isn't a problem because the RR predates the plant and operated in Seabrook after the plant went online. The charter being intact protects the preemption. No way a trail is going through...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

All pilot cars will be upgraded to production spec. The first unnumbered pair is already having that job done in Springfield. The numbered cars may have their mods done at Wellington. NETransit...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Puttering around up and down the Somerville-Medford test track. 12 production cars (1400-1411) have been delivered to Wellington, but they isolated the first revenue set to the ones that had the...

Re: Worcester Improvements

Congestion fix. Worcester's got the most extreme interlocking complexity of any terminal station given all the junctions and freight leads surrounding it. Backup moves on/off the platform and...

Re: Amtrak / Intercity Rail Discussion Thread

It was never going to happen soon, but unified state ownership is a prerequisite so at a transactional level this is a good thing. Pan Am could've sold in pieces to abutters or to the towns to build...

Re: Design a Better Lot

The Comm Ave. service stations are on the Brookline side of the border and wedges against BU development in a war that's lasted for decades. There's a thread on that here somewhere detailing the long...

Re: Design a Better Lot

The Citgo on the corner of Huntington and South Huntington has always irked me as anachronistic.

Re: Design a Better Lot

Wellington backlot is earmarked for a new T bus garage that can feed 200 sixty-footers into Charlestown, Fellsway, and Lynn districts. Parking would be traded vertical in a new garage closer to 16....

Re: Logan Airport Capital Projects

Park-and-ride expansion, so it is in second-degree...albeit more benignly than the onsite stuff that begs more pressing questions about long-term sustainability.

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

The minimum set you can run systemwide is 4 cars given the way the signal interface in locos/cabs are configured. You can go shorter (Metro North shuttles do) with a reprogramming, but 4 is an...

Re: Fantasy T maps

Arlington Heights needs to have a sizeable storage yard at least until some further extension is figured out, and the only suitable site for that is Arlington Lumber on Park Ave. since the entirety...

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

That news hasn't reached the MTA's ears yet, as the Staten Island Railway North Shore Line reactivation still cites prohibition on HRT grade crossings and requirement for contiguous fencing as...

Re: Design a Better Lot

No need to infill. Union's already being built with a back egress to Charlestown St. that puts you a straight 800 ft. walk from station exit door to Target entry door. Medford St. only saves a...

http://www.128corporatealliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Waltham-Traffic-Com_Spec-Mtg-April-26.pdf

This is from Spring 2017. I don't think any design changes have been announced since then....

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

CTA's are all grandfathered, and the last in North America on HRT mode. They've been trying hard to get rid of the remainders, but neighborhood negotiations have deadlocked on each of them. It's...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Yes...past Shirley you're well into the Worcester Hills and the ROW is shaped by hilltops way too steep to climb. Pretty much all the way to Deerfield the line is bolted to meandering river valleys...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Probably south. Stony Brook is the only wetlands; all of the ponds are former retention ponds for the quarry that used to be there. The proposed site for the Fitchburg multimodal station uses the...

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

Any cars can be modded for roof-mount vs. underside current collection. That isn't an issue. The FTA not allowing HRT grade crossings anymore is the big change. The cars are too high off the ground...

Re: Reasonable Transit Pitches

Nothing formal study-wise, but a lot of "Why not?" blogger & transpo-advocate pub for this very similar to what you pose. Mostly last 15 years because before then there used to be a freight siding to...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Yes...god...thank you. There is nothing wrong with making an ambitious pitch, but there's got to be something...an under-served need, a growth segment...motivating the pitch. Sometimes someone...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Does it have to take one poster waiting to get home/off-tiny-phone to Google for a document to get others repeating the same closely-held belief again and again to try to ground personal suppositions...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Train Sim has long allowed that, but they have a rabid audience of railfan foamers demanding features like that. I don't think the rapid transit enthusiasts are quite as vocal in their gaming...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Because such supersizing that you propose would not get an EPA permit. When the original garage was built 2000 spaces was considered the upper limit for mitigable runoff into the wetlands from cars...
