Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

It's a great idea where they can get it, but it's unfortunately going to be very balkanized by municipality where town-control roads are concerned. For every Everett there's some other NIMBY'ville...

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Longwood would be an issue because the ped crossing between platforms doubles as an Emerald Necklace egress.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Trucks are very regularly replaced, and usually drawn from a small handful of near-universal designs as far as HRT is concerned. They might even be single-sourced for all of Red/Orange/Blue.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Rebuilt 1986-88. That is the only date that matters...actual vs. projected service life past overhaul. The 01500/01600's are mechanically younger than the never-rebuilt Orange Line cars. They're past...

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

You can do provisioned islands with single track. Rowley is an example. The single platform is 12 ft. wide, island width. But because it's single track one side is just a simple ramp-down egress. If...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

True consistency would probably require the chimes to be pumped through the train's speakers instead of on a door-mount chime noisemaker, such that it can be made part-and-parcel with the ASA. But...

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

I know you're trying to argue otherwise here, but those are beyond-horrible frequencies. The Amtrak Springfield Shuttle runs more frequently than that...and is going to Greenfield soon with debut...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

That wasn't a mixed reply; the post in question had nothing to do with the door buttons dealt with separately...just complaining about the irrelevant Wellington platform looking ugly next to the...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

No, I don't know what you're talking about. Separate budget, separate projects, separate project schedules because they have jack nothing to do with each other. This isn't even the right thread for...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

No, not just like the Blue Line. Blue has the buttons at every door; Orange has them only at certain doors.

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Station platform maintenance has zero to do with fleet support. While we all want good station repair, for budgeting purposes it's a million miles out-of-scope from fleet management and has to come...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

Yup...sandbags. More of the weight on any given transit vehicle is tied up in water and carbon held together by human flesh than is ever accounted for by steel and electromechanical parts, so empty...

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Not at all. It needs oversight, and that's where critical staffing shortages let them get repeatedly snookered because there simply weren't enough bodies available to watch the process. Or enough...

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

The SLE arrangement is legacy cruft dating to 2003 when 4 New London SLE trains had to be cut back to Old Saybrook in order to add 4 AMTK Regionals to the schedule, because of limitations on the...

Re: Regional Rail (including North-South Rail Link)

It's because of the AMTK Springfield Shuttles. Hartford Line does not yet have much of a schedule north of Hartford to Springfield, so ConnDOT (which has always subsidized the Shuttles) is...

Re: Crazy Transit Pitches

Yeah...that's why the old P'town and Chatham trains went belly-up so early. The 1930 NYNH&H timetable shows Boston-Provincetown taking 4:25, which is close to what it takes for a Northeast Regional...

Re: A navigable Muddy River

Unfortunately almost right behind that vantage point the invasive reed overgrowth is still choking the river to death. I walked the northerly path Park Dr. to Brookline Ave. on Wednesday. They have...
