Re: Biking in Boston

What's wrong with the current bridge's alignment that makes it desirable to preserve the former alignment?

If the other road is one way right-to-left, that is. :-)

Re: Space Savers

Somerville was doing precisely that on Lower Broadway today, and presumably other places.

Re: Summer St. Gondola

It's not even that; the "suspension" cables are purely decorative.

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The point of including the Community Path Extension with the GLX was that building it after the fact would have added hugely to its construction cost. And the Friends of the Community Path have a...

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Yes, but either one is a much longer walk from West Medford Square, due to the street layout. (I used to live near there.)

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

They were never going to cross 60 with the GLX; the plan was to put the station just south of it. I'm glad to see the plan includes a pedestrian walkway to West Medford Square; it's otherwise a long...

Re: Somerville Developments

Oh no! Where is Boulter going?
(OK, phew, Google sez they're now on Riverside Ave in Medford.)

Re: MXD | 145 Broadway/250 Binney | Kendall Square

I went to a presentation they did this morning for employees. The clamshell is used to dig down to bedrock, about 100 feet down, and then they bring in the big grinder thing (actually called a...

Re: MXD | 145 Broadway/250 Binney | Kendall Square

They might be just replacing that clamshell digger, because they still have a few more weeks worth of digging to do.

Re: Summer St. Gondola

Here's some more detail I hadn't seen before, page 3 of this newsletter: http://files.constantcontact.com/c56c44eb501/d596d023-a163-42c7-a014-d54d24a30f94.pdf?ver=1481757906000

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I had to google the moving company whose trucks are parked in the background to figure out where that was. :-) I recall they're upgrading that track for PAR freights since the track from Yard 8 that...

Re: Summer St. Gondola

Doesn't slow the entire system down, just maybe some of the cabins in the terminal (they're driven around a track by a series of tires). And wheelchairs and strollers can roll directly on, like the...

Re: Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Presumably they're not building that bridge over Boston Ave, then.

Re: Summer St. Gondola

Urban gondolas have full level boarding, and the cabin can stop in the station if necessary (normally it rolls through at a slow speed).

Re: Summer St. Gondola

I freely admit to having a bit of an obsession around these things, comes from being a nerd who grew up skiing. What they're great at in terms of urban transport is getting a lot of people over a...

Re: Summer St. Gondola

Nope. A lot of cities have installed these, particularly in Latin America, and they're the same systems that run in all kinds of harsh weather at ski resorts worldwide.

Re: Somerville Developments

I'd say retail is a safe bet, in that neighborhood. Wonder if they've thought about incorporating the house behind it that's been mummified in housewrap with a STOP WORK order on the door for the...

Re: Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

Did a little research. Per this article (http://www.belmontcitizensforum.org/2016/11/03/waltham-solicits-bids-for-design-of-rail-trail/), the 1265 Main developers' plans for new on- and off-ramps...

Re: Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

That's awesome! Why do they need to replace the rail bridge, though?

Re: Biking in Boston

Oh, that's excellent. That and closing the stub end of Harvey St to vehicular traffic make that path so much better.

Re: Comm Ave Bridge Replacement.

They're doing the Comm Ave inbound side of the bridge this year, and the outbound side next year. I assume that's so they can maintain traffic over the bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and buses. ...

Re: MXD | 145 Broadway/250 Binney | Kendall Square

And I really like the design of the building. They had a big Lucite model of the interior; looks like it's going to be quite a nice space. Never seen box joints on a 19-story building before, though....
