Re: The New Retail Thread

I get it, but the reporter turned a potentially interesting comparison into an Aesop's fable with the moral that people of all stripes are nice. Barf?

Re: The New Retail Thread

^ I remember back when the Globe was worth reading (does that make me old?)

Honestly, as an assignment, this wasn't a bad "local flavor" reporting idea... but executed with all the nuance and...

Re: Revere Developments

Thanks to everyone for answering my sincere curiosity about Revere - quite an education I've got in the previous 10 or so posts.

I'm still knocking my head on the wall trying to figure out why...

Re: The New Retail Thread

Jaho Coffee Roasters and Wine Bar opened on the corner of Huntington and Harcourt St - basically right underneath the Pru-Copley gerbil tube. I wish them well. They've seemed busy so far for...

Re: Revere Developments

What's the deal with Revere? Is it a long-ingrained image problem? How could T-accessible beachfront property - and high-end amenities to cater to those properties - not be exploding in this market?...

Re: Ode to Brutalism

Rowley Way in north London (near St. John’s Wood). Beautiful on a number of levels actually. Look at it from the north - where it abuts the railroad tracks - you can see how it’s designed to cleave...

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

It fits: Seaport Blvd is the Comm Ave of the "New" Boston.

Comm Ave: Old money, understated elegance and classical forms
Seaport Blvd: Global finance, on-trend glitz, ephemeral fashion
...

Re: I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

We need to think bigger.

Eliminate SFR/Storrow all the way from Cambridge Street (SFR will feed directly into the Pike) to Charlesgate. Build the Pike's long-needed Back Bay ramps. Voila - no need...

Re: Tremont Crossing | Roxbury

^ That seems harsh. They're packing and layering a ton of retail into a small footprint. It can't all face Tremont - though in fact the small storefronts mostly do. And what doesn't face Tremont...

Re: Kenmore Square North

Question: Though I totally get the preservation-minded response, what's so special about this building? Aren't there thousands like it across Brookline, Allston, Brighton, Fenway, Cambridge, Roxbury,...

Re: The Parkway Apartments | 1507 VFW Parkway | West Roxbury

I've always referred to it as Rt 1 also. At some point they officially re-routed 1 North coming up from Foxboro onto, of all things, 95 South to bring it over to a 93 North concurrency. Not sure why...

Re: The Parkway Apartments | 1507 VFW Parkway | West Roxbury

^ Note the last parenthesis should be included in the URL

I think it's funny that they call this Parkway Apartments, when this is on the section of VFW "Parkway" south of Bridge/Spring that is...

Re: The Aberdeen | 1650 Commonwealth Ave. | Brighton

I don't get the hate. This does exactly what you want an in-fill building to do. Alright, do the narrow (staircase?) windows look somewhat reminiscent of prison or self-storage? Yeah... maybe... But...

Re: Old Boston Edison Plant | Summer St | South Boston

2040 is going to be a banner year. Look forward to full build out of this, and also West Station! Oh, and I could conceivably be a grandparent!

Whittle I’m with you completely. A new site will generate far better participation, conversation and commitment to “housekeeping” beyond what we have now. Question is how best to migrate the...

Re: Briv

Count me in favor of migrating to archboston.net. Justin's template clearly proves it's capable of handling similar discussions. The limiter on this site is moderation - not that Statler and Van...

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Joel, I've posted this idea before, which is quite similar to what you're saying - substitute your downtown routing for the Greenway and they would serve a similar function. I routed things this way...

Re: Indianapolis, a Bike Haven City

Thanks for putting together such a great post. A lot of great moments on that cultural trail - though I have to say many seem more 'contrived'/'interventionist' than authentically urban, just judging...

Re: General MBTA Discussion Thread

Urban Ring is a strange oversight, I agree. But perhaps the most critical of oversights,a and the worst thing about this document in my mind, is the way it kicks the can on any improvements that make...

Re: South Bank Bridge Project | West End

I don't ever bike or even much walk this area. So, am I right in thinking that this would let someone bike from Science Park to the North End without having to go down to Causeway?

Looks like it...

Re: Allston Yards (Stop and Shop) | 60 Everett St | Allston

Probably a symptom of the mere-exposure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mere-exposure_effect) effect, but I'm starting to see Elkus designs and think "whoa, that's great!"

Re: Allston Square | 372 Cambridge St | Allston

415 Cambridge is my favorite among this mix. Has a distinctly Copenhagen feel to it. But it's rather bizarre to be building around the auto parts store. How long will that owner hold out, and now...
