Re: Open Thread

Toronto is indeed growing vertical at an astounding pace. They absolutely understand transit oriented development. From what I could tell, you can trace the Line 1 subway by following the swath of...

Re: Brookline Developments

My understanding (I could be wrong) is that chopping down buildings happened at a time when it was hard to fill the apartments. They couldn't collect enough rent to cover the tax bill.

Re: Housing a Changing City: Boston 2030

I believe you are describing a "town" and they do seem pretty popular throughout New England.

Re: Housing a Changing City: Boston 2030

Just curious, do you have any supporting data? There isn't much red in this table (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Boston#Largest_cities_and_towns) or this one...

Re: Housing a Changing City: Boston 2030

From Wikipedia:

2010 - 617,594
2017 - 687,584

+69,990 in 7 years or about 10,000 per year. Extrapolating the same number of people per year:

2020 - 717,000
2030 - 817,000

Re: Logan Airport Capital Projects

I'm not sure what the point of your comment is, but it raises an interesting question that I haven't been able to answer with some light googling. Perhaps someone knows a good resource to get this...

Re: New Red and Orange Line Cars

The increases are to peak capacity. They donít need 50% more cars to run 50% more cars during rush hour.

Re: UMass Boston Residence Hall 1 | Columbia Point | Dorchester

I donít know where you are coming up with stuff. Umass is a public school. They arenít going to stop taking locals and fill up with out of staters. They have a mandate to educate the people of...

Re: One Greenway (Parcel 24) | 0 Kneeland Street | Chinatown

In engineering, we have a saying: Don't let "perfect" be the enemy of "good."

Just because these housing lotteries aren't a perfect solution the the problem for everyone, doesn't mean they aren't...

Re: Amazon HQ2 RFP

Agree.

Chicago is a good example. They don't have the same housing escalation as many places despite having a great economy. The reason is that they have a huge supply of housing across a vast...

Re: Logan Airport Capital Projects

Logan transport is organized around buses already. We should leverage that instead of scraping it. A congestion charge that funds more buses and reduces car congestion thus improving the operations...

Re: Four Seasons Tower @ CSC | 1 Dalton Street | Back Bay

I think you are grossly overestimating the downside and are giving no weight at all to the upside. More than anything, I think you are addicted to the status quo.

We charge property taxes...

Re: Four Seasons Tower @ CSC | 1 Dalton Street | Back Bay

Homeowner insurance has no problem defining a vacant home. I believe it is pretty typical to have to pay an increased premium if your home is unoccupied for more than 3 consecutive months. There is...

Re: Green Line Reconfiguration

3-car trains, signal priority, stop consolidation, all-door boarding... there is a lot of low hanging fruit to add a lot of capacity to the Green Line. Heavy rail conversion is a far distant need.
