One issue I see past haymarket is the pinch between state st and the blue line tunnel roof. I’m not sure if the grade exceeds 3% but it’s pretty darn close. There’s also the vertical curve right at the pinch which could cause issues for trains.
I believe the photo in the linked post is of the...
This is an interesting idea! And welcome to the forum, it’s always good to hear fresh ideas on topics that have long been discussed on this board.
Having said that, I have a few thoughts.
1. It’s possible you’ve already considered this, but the central artery tunnel is too steep for FRA grade...
I believe the issue, as F-Line had previously stated, is that the Type 10s can’t physically fit within the inner loop of Heath St. I believe they can on the outer loop without stretching into the road but I could be wrong.
Here’s a great aerial showing (from R to L) the construction of both the Veteran’s road bridge (since demolished) and the extant rail bridge, followed by the previous rail bridge. You can clearly see the original southbound wye ROW and the junction towards the center of the old rail bridge.
I think the construction of the Veterans Memorial Bridge necessitated the severing of the southbound portion of the original wye, so they had to realign to the current wye configuration. It also looks like there was never a northbound leg of the wye in the current configuration.
Yes. The Readville facility will be for diesel locomotive repair, much like BET on the north side. With the severing of the grand junction during this project, it looks like a south side diesel facility will be entirely necessary (unfortunately).
Widett is not planned to have the same...

(Sorry if it’s paywalled) Interesting to read that most of the passengers who were asked said their biggest concern was parking. In general, this isn’t the goal of relocating the station at all. Most...

Looks like this flew under the radar but disappointing nonetheless. While I agree a Bangor...
Not one mention of the actual Freeport station in that article. They also seem to blame it being somewhat empty on the fact that it’s set back from Main st… I find that a little hard to believe. I think the new owners should focus on bringing in some bars and restaurants in addition to locally...
Beautiful work, as always! Quick question: with the revival of the A branch, is the 57 necessary? I could see a short-turned bus pinging between Watertown and Oak Sq (if the A terminates at Oak), but would it really be necessary to have a surface transitway on Comm for it? Not saying it's a bad...
