^Nice reflection of the Greenway! As for those 3 low-rise buildings on the right, faceing the Greenay, they could be redeveloped,It was once rumored as a site for a 80 story tower when the TNP tower was 1st anounce, then the brick one in the middle was to get an 6 story addition.

Incredible picture! I definetely think boston should 'beautify' the facades of those really small low rise buildings. The upper 3 floors on that white white look dreadful. If they were to give some of those buildings facades like those you'd find on some of the smaller buildings in new york, that would look incredible.

kz1000ps
05-25-2009, 09:56 AM
Those white buildings are the Richardson Block, and they're on the National Register of Historic Places, partly because 1) that white stuff is marble, a rarity for a commercial block, and 2) it was designed as a whole even though there were different owners for each building.

Besides that, they look great up close, even if they have been a bit mistreated.

Boston02124
05-25-2009, 08:30 PM
^I use to go to the Photo Quick store in that Marble building every day for almost for over 12 years!I like the block just not the end that faces the Green Way,The brown Building should be stripped of its paint and a new front added to the middle building and the crown restored to the marble fronted building or a tall skinny tower would be a nice replacement IMO.

Although these low rise buildings could be aestheticaly restored and improved, I hope the parcels are not consolidated for another high rise. In this area of town they inject much needed relief to the Class A towers which lease most of their ground floor commercial space to chains. These "rustic" buildings contain locally owned retail, eating and drinking places (probably due relatively low rents for this area).

Yes it was! You could hardly find a more unabashedly urban spot to live.. people, cars, buildings, mass transit, ambulances, fire trucks, Fenway fans.... My current place is too quiet. It's within city limits, but it may as well be Newton.

Here's a pano from the summer of '07:

Fort Hill is a water standpipe (i.e. watertower). Pipe was put in as part of the first expansion of the water supply out to what was then known as Long Lake. Long Lake sounded too boring so the body of water was renamed Lake Cochituate. Pipe went up around 1850. Cochituate was inadequate within 20 years so Wachusett was created out in Clinton and 50 years after that came Quabbin. I would love to see the ENF on building Quabbin today.

August contest
August contest theme: Architecture
Posted by Teresa Hanafin, Boston.com Staff July 24, 2009 12:54 PM

We're about to celebrate our one-year anniversary here at RAW, and we're thrilled with the success of the site -- and how so many of you have jumped in to participate, share your photos and tips, and make RAW what it is today.

I was thinking to myself that we all should be really proud of what we've built here ... and then it hit me: The theme for August should be Architecture -- photos of the built environment. Ah ha!

In addition, our friend Ponder This and others have suggested a contest in which the photos must be taken within the month of the competition. I've always thought that was a good idea to try as a way of getting us all out and about, so let's add that as a wrinkle this month.

So just two rules for August:

1. The photos entered in the contest must be of a human-made structure -- no natural architecture, no matter how stunning the Cliffs of Moher may be.

2. You have to take the photo in August of 2009. Make sure your camera's date and time settings are correct!

Other than that, anything goes. Your shots can be of interior or exterior architecture. Shoot old buildings or new buildings, commercial, industrial, houses, bridges, signs, fences, staircases, ceilings, arches, courtyards, public squares, fountains, statues.

Take landscapes that put the architecture in a large context, or close-ups of one small but fascinating detail. Shoot wide-angle or tight.

Include people for perspective or explanation, or not.

Shoot during the day or at night. Experiment with lighting and shadows -- both can lend drama to architecture.

The 4 Flickr tags this month are:

I was looking through your Flickr and was blown away. Your stuff is so good.

Thanks, Vans. But you have the photographer's eye, something I cannot "learn." I have never had the "eye," but I've taught myself the technical know-how enough to take a "good picture." I really do wish I had the eye, though. Thanks for the kind words, but I must say I am jealous of your photography every time I look at it.

Figured this was the best place for this:

While stumbling through links on Wikipedia, I found that one of the towers from the old Fitchburg Railway Depot, demolished in the mid to late 1920's to make way for the Boston Garden, made its way to Truro, on the Outer Cape (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.034645,-70.055288&t=h&sll=42.034524,-70.055265&sspn=0.002861,0.004823&ie=UTF8&ll=42.034524,-70.055265&spn=0.002861,0.004823&z=18). Now called Jenny Lind Tower, the story goes that Jenny Lind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Lind) sang to an adorning crowd from one of the station's towers, as the concert was completely sold out. In 1927 a fan of hers who owned the land in Truro had the tower reconstructed out there.

The former station:

The lone tower today:

Good eye! (Perhaps this belongs in the "Love" thread, but, after years of hatred for it, I have come to love 100 Summer St. I like its 3 box massing, its rust like exterior. I like it that Boston high rise developers stopped building in this finish, giving this building a "specimen" quality. I miss the Lollipop too! Give me back my damned Lollipop!)

Can't say 100 Summer does anything for me... I laid out in the "Power 5" thread that I like One Boston Place, and that's about the only building in Boston in that "Cor-ten is king" style that I like.

It looks like Peddocks Island, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to see it from E Boston, although I could be wrong. Peddocks' eastern side looks like cliffs, but it's actually severe erosion which occured overnight, during a single storm -- the 1991 nor'easter, aka, Pefect Storm. It simply washed away a huge chunk of the eastern portion of the island. There's no rock there, its basically just sand.

If the photo was taken from E Boston, Im guessing its one of the Brewsters. I thought they were rockier though.

Vote for your favorite 'Architecture' photos
Posted by Teresa Hanafin, Boston.com Staff September 8, 2009 12:02 PM

It's time to vote for the best Architecture photos out of the 50 finalists as chosen by our judge, Bruno Debas. The top 3 finishers win gift cards worth $100 for First Place, $50 for Second, and $25 for Third.

Vote using our Voting Machine below. Be sure to use the small bar on the right to scroll down to see all the photos. Cursor over the photos to see them a little bigger; click to get a large size. Use the X in the upper right corner to close them.

Click and drag your choices into the numbered boxes at the top, and hit the "Cast vote" button. You'll see a popup box that acknowledges your vote (if you don't see it, it's because it's up higher on the page).

Since we didn't post the VM until Tuesday, my new BFF Jim has convinced me to leave voting open an extra day. Voting will end at 4 p.m. Friday (Sept. 11); we'll post the winning photos on Monday.

"Hey, man, you don't talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet-warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he'll... uh... well, you'll say "hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you. He won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say, "do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you"... I mean I'm no, I can't... It wasn't that difficult, due to the repitition from adjoining areas for copying and pasting. I have a talent for that exacting kind of work, being a civil engineer and an artist.

I just had to get those damned traffic signals out of the way to make it look a true period piece. It's on my desk top now. Armpitsofmight created that photo, and its a beauty.

THAT is North Station?! And now we have the new Garden shit?! Goddamnit Boston. That building is beautiful. I want it rebuilt. Now.

When I eventually get accepted to, study, and graduate from architecture school (of course, that's the plan right now,) I'm dedicating my practice to the research and design of these types of buildings. Classical architecture. Early 20th/Late 19th century architecture. Brick and stone. Thick walls. Details. And of course I'll have my own contemporary tastes, but there's no reason they can't be incorporated into that style.

Hopefully by the time I'm out of school, some of these buildings will still exist.

That's the old old North Station, which was torn down to build the old Boston Garden in the late 1920s. The photo is at least a century old, as it predates construction of the Causeway Street elevated Green Line.

Now we are left with boring generic buildings in much of the area. Why did buildings in the early 20th century have so much architectural detail, while the buildings of today are so boring and cheap-looking? Even background apartment buildings had a lot of interest to them. Was the profit motive not as strong at the turn of the century? Was it really more expensive to include these details?

How could the beautifully detailed cathederals and castles in medieval Europe and later during the Renaissance get built when money was so scarce??? Cheap labor...very cheap labor! Why did the textile mills and shoe factories leave New England for the South? Cheap labor!! Why do so many of our goods come from China and not made in the USA??? Yep, cheap labor.

That photo could start a small discussion. I never saw this area before the tunnel was built, but the tunnel both facilitates and obstructs pedestrian circulation in the area. Facilitates, by connecting the Science Center plaza directly to the north gate of Harvard Yard, removing any intervening street traffic. Obstructs, by forcing all pedestrians to use this path and making it hard to walk any other direction (such as from Johnston Gate to the Harvard Epworth Church).

Anyone know where I can find photos of what this area looked like before the tunnel?

"Melena Cass Boulevard" looks and sounds like something that should be in LA or Phoenix. It should be be totally redeveloped and renamed something classy or at least Boston-y ("Cassway"? "Cass Ave"?)

Lurker
10-24-2009, 03:41 PM
Melena Cass was a very important woman in the city. She deserves a street named after her. The anti-urban light industrial joke of a master plan dating back to the I-695 and "Campus High-School" which became Madison Park H.S. needs to be shredded and replaced with something congruent with the original South End grid. Ideally, it should be another, albeit better planned as an avenue, Mass Ave.
