Commuter rail to link Hub with T.F. Green Airport by 2008
Boston Business Journal
Bostonians lacking cars are now free to move about the country.
Plans are under way to expand commuter rail service to T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, R.I., by 2008, linking the airport with Boston via Providence.
In addition to many of the same carriers that fly in and out of Boston's Logan International Airport, T.F. Green serves as a terminal for Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) of Dallas.
A second station is planned for North Kingstown, R.I., the Associated Press reported Monday, near the University of Rhode Island's campus in Kingston.
Construction on the T.F. Green portion of the $225 million project is slated for this spring, the AP reported, citing the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. An elevated "moving" sidewalk will connect the station and an adjoining parking garage to the airport.
The commuter rail stations initially will run eight trains on weekdays, the AP reported, but will not offer service on weekends. |

...if the likely outcome of low ridership is correctly blamed on spotty service. But if they were inclined to such insight, they wouldn't propose weekend closure to begin with, would they?
More likely: ridership will be low and they'll conclude there's no demand --a plausible conclusion, even when not true.
Something like this happened on DC's Metro, which for a while didn't run on weekends. The theory was that there was no demand. Fortunately they reopened it weekends, and you should see how packed it is now. (Of course it helps that they rebuilt the city in the interim.) |

| I recall that the Newburyport commuter rail extension initially had no Sunday service, but that was added within the first year. |
