With gas prices soaring, state Sen. Marc R. Pacheco, D-Taunton, joined a group of lawmakers Wednesday in filing legislation to finance the extension or improvement of commuter rail service to Fall River, New Bedford and other major urban areas as an alternative to driving.
The legislation would direct the state to issue special obligation bonds to complete the following projects: commuter rail service to Springfield, Worcester, New Bedford-Fall River and Fitchburg, the extension of the MBTA's Blue Line to Lynn and the extension of the Lakeville Line to Wareham, Pacheco said. |

| Extension, expansion, and additions are great, however, they need to think about the operation costs of these new extensions. The money is always there for capital projects, but when it comes to maintaining that capital, the MBTA fails miserably. Expanding the system like this will only worsen an already stretched operating budget. |
