i've been to Orlando.
a couple of streets downtown could actually pass for a city.
I thought it sucked overall. But i've heard good things from people who live there.
Typical Florida sprawl IMO.
And I don't think it would be 1/10th as 'important' if it weren't for the amusement parks. |

Never thought about it before this post, but it kinda looks like Oakland now, highrises on the lake and all. Been nearly twenty years since I went to D-World. O-town didn't have much of a real downtown when I was last there. Kind of like a giant, overgrown office park with lots of motels/hotels.
BTW--Not the original O-Town. Although Oakland likes to be called Oaktown now.
(And P-Town is Provincetown. Never heard anyone call Portland P-Town until you did, patrick. How about up-city in Maine? ) |

i thought of the downtown as comparable in size to portland's, but with way taller buildings. the downtown and the part of the city that surrounds downtown (entertainment oriented) are really two distinct places. I liked downtown.

it was very sprawled, with high rises jutting out of the woods when you'd least expect to see them...however, I sorta liked it in a strange way. I dont think that sort of sprawl could be pulled off in the northeast. maybe the climate affects how i think about sprawl...when you dont mind traveling one from one destination to another for long distances because of the warm weather, you dont really seem to mind the sprawl as much, at least i dont.

fair enough, but that begs the question, why would the theme parks choose to locate there in the first place. perhaps the theme parks wouldn't be 1/10th as important if they weren't located in orlando? i dont think the many of the skyscrapers intown are disney headquarters.
i figured most people would nto like the city, but for some strange reaosn, i liked it a lot, almost in the same sort of way that i would like going to a fair or watching WWE wrestling (actually, i like to do neither) but i mean, for a visit, it is fun to see the "america" that people overseas hate so much...if you know what i mean... |

| Not a big fan of Whorelando, too much sprawl (it the only place on Earth I have seen a Super Target). I have virtually nothing good to say about this city, except that a few areas of downtown are nice and certain suburbs are nice (but again, all sprawl). It is way too hot in the summers and if it wasn't for the amusement parks, it would be a total hole. |

| some might consider many cities to be "holes," like worcester. but since (I believe) youlive in worcester, you should know that the perception you get of a city depends on your experience while there...i guess we must have just had two different experiences with the place, i really liked it a lot. i dont think a dense urban area like boston would go well in a tropical climate...i rather liked the sprawl instead of density...gave mroe of a reason to drive around in the nice weather. oh well, thanks for commenting. |

yeah, youre right, it is dense. but it doesn't work for me. i have never been, but it looks like a slum, and it is very corrupt, etc. etc. etc.
what i meant to say is that I would more enjoy a city like orlando than a city like mexico city, just because when the climate is so enjoyable, i wouldnt necessarily want to be in an overly urban setting...id rather see the trees, grass, etc. orlando allows you to see nature while still being within close proximity to urban ammenities. that is what i liked about it. |

| suit yourself, but a boston type versus an orlando type city in the nice weather is a nobrainer to me. Id rather have it laid out like orlando. just a matter of personal preference, i guess. |
